Switzerland’s national team’s manager, Vladimir Petkovic, has spoken about Granit Xhaka’s recent red card for Arsenal, revealing that he hopes the midfielder learns from it.

During Arsenal’s narrow 3-2 victory over Swansea at the Emirates, Xhaka tripped Modou Barrow near the halfway line and although we can argue over whether it was a yellow or red until the card comes home (it was a yellow), the latter was given on the day.

Despite there being a misconception that the 24-year-old’s always getting red cards, this was his first at club level.

However, Arsene Wenger has been keen to repeat the important of discipline ahead of the north London derby on Sunday; a fixture that always gets the blood boiling in front of the baying crowd.

“I’m a bit concerned yes because the discipline is important,” he said.

“We want to be effective in all positions we face. In derbies it is important to maintain discipline.

“He’s quite normally a composed and calm guy – sometimes he has a reaction that is a bit impulsive. He has to work on that and keep control of his reactions in the game.”

Now, Xhaka’s Switzerland boss has echoed Wenger.

“I hope that, as his coach Arsène Wenger has said, he will learn his lesson for the future,” Petkovic said.

“In big teams, every red card can be dangerous for your own team.”

Although Xhaka’s record isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be, he is feisty, which is what we want as long as he’s not getting us reduced to 10-men!
