Robert Pires has made a bold claim in that he believes Mesut Ozil could become the ‘master’ of Arsenal, just like Dennis Bergkamp.

This isn’t the first time someone attached to the club has compared Ozil to the Dutchman. In fact, only this month (November) Arsene Wenger compared the two stars.

“There are similarities now with him and Bergkamp,” Wenger said.

“But Dennis Bergkamp committed for a long period, played until he was 38. I wish we have ten more years of Ozil.

“That depends. To become a legend at the club you need to stay for a long time. If you stay two years you would not be a legend.”

Subtle, Arsene.

For a player who not only regularly visits the current squad at London Colney but also played alongside the Flying Dutchman, to compare the two must be a huge compliment for the German considering it’s common knowledge that Bergkamp was one of the best in the world.

“Something happened in his head, and as a result he’s scoring many goals,” said Pires.

“This is the difference between last season and this. Now he has begun to think about finishing in the area. When you’re in good shape it is important to score.

“Ozil has great qualities. He can make about 12 goals in the Premier League, as did Bergkamp.

Before Dennis was the ‘master’, now it is Özil. I love both because they play very good football, but playing for the team, not for themselves.”

This season, Ozil’s came has come along even further. He’s now scored seven goals in all competitions and while he’s still assisted two, his lack of composure in front of goal was his only real weakness.

Now, the sky’s the limit, especially after Germany manager, Joachim Löw, decided not to call him up for the last couple of international matches and instead allowed him to rest.

Ozil’s bound to make a start against Manchester United on 19 November and I’m sure the playmaker won’t disappoint.
