Mike Jones has been handed the reins of Arsenal v Bournemouth this weekend in the Premier League.

Jones has refereed nine games this season (only Lee Mason has been given fewer), seven of which have been in the Premier League and he has shown 27 yellows and two reds.

It will be his first Arsenal or Bournemouth match of the season.

Jones took charge of four Arsenal games last season:

  • Watford 0 Arsenal 3, 2 yellows Watford, 1 Arsenal (Mertesacker)
  • Liverpool 3 Arsenal 3, 2 yellows Liverpool, 0 Arsenal
  • Hull 0 Arsenal 4, 2 yellows Hull, 2 Arsenal (Elneny, Giroud)
  • Arsenal 1 Norwich 0, 0 yellows Norwich, 1 Arsenal (Ozil)

He refereed five Bournemouth games last season:

  • Liverpool 1 Bournemouth 0, 2 yellows total, 1 to Bournemouth
  • Chelsea 0 Bournemouth 1, 3 yellows total, 1 to Bournemouth
  • Birmingham 1 Bournemouth 2, 1 yellow Birmingham
  • Crystal Palace 1 Bournemouth 2, 7 yellows total, 4 to Bournemouth
  • Bournemouth 1 Liverpool 2, no cards

Jones is a referee who like to let the game flow, often at the safety of player’s limbs. It was Jones who was in charge when Leicester turned up at the Emirates in February, 2015 and proceeded to get away with actual murder on the pitch.

Remember this, which wasn’t even given as a foul and resulted in Sanchez being taken off injured:

That was also the game in which Jones, despite not even looking at the action, managed to book Giroud for turning his back and walking away from a goalkeeper who then kicked the ball straight at him.

Jones’ review from that game does not make for good reading.

He will be assisted by Adrian Holmes and Mark Scholes. Graham Scott will be the fourth official.
