Nigeria national team coach, Gernot Rohr, claims that although he wasn’t exactly surprised by Alex Iwobi’s superb rainbow flick against Algeria, it wasn’t expecting it either.

Speaking after the impressive 3-1 win in which Iwobi played for 75 minutes, earning his eighth cap, Rohr praised the 20-year-old and revealed that he met with Arsene Wenger last month.

“I didn’t see [his rainbow flick] coming but I wasn’t surprised he did it,” Rohr said.

“When I met Arsene Wenger last month, we talked about Iwobi and he told me there’s more to his game than what we are seeing at the moment.

“He (Iwobi) is a confident lad. He is not afraid to try new tricks in training and games. He can only get better, his best is yet to come.”

It must be comforting from Iwobi’s point of view to hear both of his coaches speaking so highly about him, as well as Wenger putting time aside from managing Arsenal to meet with his Nigeria coach. He clearly takes the forward’s future and progress really seriously.

So far this season, Iwobi’s made 14 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions and, more often than not, he’s been a regular starter. He’s also had three assists so if he can become a bit more composed in front of goal, he’ll be unstoppable. However, for now, he’s only 20. He’ll get there with time.
