Ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Manchester United on Saturday, we look back in history at two of the greatest teams ever to grace the Premier League.

As Gooners, we’re obviously going to say that the Invincibles, a team that went 49 games unbeaten, are the best team in Premier League history. No team has done this since.

However, another contender is United’s 1998/99 team, who, led by Sir Alex Ferguson, managed to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. No other team has been able to do this.

So, which team was better?

The teams

Arsenal’s 2003/04 side was probably the strongest we’ve ever had. Our most used starting XI was Lehmann, Lauren, Campbell, Toure, Vieira, Gilberto, Ljungberg, Pires, Bergkamp, Henry.

Our attack in particular was one of the best in the world and it’s hard to see us ever topping that again. A bit depressing, I know.

United’s starting XI during their treble-winning season was also immensely strong. Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Andy Cole, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were all regular starters.

Where Arsenal’s finesse going forward often prevailed in our unbeaten season, the Red Devils’ was just solid all over. Substance over style.

Statistics

Arsenal finished the 2003/04 season with 90 points having won 26 and drawn 12.

We scored 73 goals compared to second-place Chelsea who netted 67 and ended on 79 points.

The season United won the treble, they won the League by one point. Arsenal were second with 78 while they were on 79, having drawn 13, won 22 and lost three. They did however score 80 goals, although they let in 37. We only let in 17 that same season.

Verdict

At risk of sitting on the fence here, both teams were incredible in their own right. While winning three trophies in one season is huge, going a whole term without losing a single match is unreal.

As an Arsenal fan, however, I’m more inclined to choose the Invincibles. They such a massive part of our history, how can I not?

Our friends over at Betway also had similar problems deciding. On this week’s installment of Blow the Whistle, Tom Clee and Petros Philippou argued the toss over whether Arsenal’s style outweighs United’s grit.
