Former Nigeria striker, Jonathan Akpoborie, has backed Alex Iwobi to shine for his country when they play Algeria on Saturday.

Jonathan Akpoborie played for Nigeria between 1995 – 2001 and was eventually capped 13 times, scoring four goals.

The 48-year-old believes that Iwobi will be the stand-out player when the Super Eagles next take to the pitch.

“Iwobi in my opinion could be the stand out player, the one who makes a difference on the day because he’s the unpredictable among the new bunch of players,” he said.

The 20-year-old has now earned seven caps for Nigeria having got his first call up last year. He’s scored a goal and continued to get an increasing amount of game time.

It’s fantastic to see him getting noticed and former Nigerian players getting excited about what he can do.

Over the past half a season, the forward has become a key part of Arsenal’s starting XI and, if he can stay injury free, this is only going to continue.

Hopefully, he can carry on being strong for both club and country and become more composed in front of goal.
