Although Arsene Wenger didn’t seem too sure that Alexis would be fit enough on Saturday to face Manchester United, the player seems to think he is.
Of course, Alexis would play on with one leg if he had to. However, whether he’s actually fit is another question.
“I travel to London today,” he said to La Tercera.
“I’m training on Friday and travel the same Friday to Manchester to play on Saturday at noon. No problem to play.”
When asked about what kind of shape Alexis is in following his involvement (and brace) for Chile against Uruguay just days ago, Wenger admitted that he wasn’t too sure but the forward claims he’s fine.
“I haven’t heard a lot [about his fitness] because we were in doubt 24 hours before the game against Uruguay,” said Wenger.
“We didn’t know if he’d play or not. In the end they decided to play him. He texted us to tell us he’s in good shape after the game. He came off after 84 minutes and now we have to wait. I see him tomorrow [Friday] morning and then I will see if he can be involved in the squad or not.
“What I will consider is the risk of injury because he played while recovering from a hamstring injury. I’ll consider the way he feels as well. On that front you depend on the honesty of the player, how they feel and how they recover.”
We’ll have a far better idea of who will travel to Manchester after training on Friday when Wenger can assess what’s going on.
Other team news includes the fact that, somewhat concerning, Santi Cazorla appears to have suffered a setback since he’s not even training right now, and Hector Bellerin is out for four weeks.
Fingers, toes, everything crossed that Alexis is genuinely fit and not just Alexis-fit for Saturday.
