Granit Xhaka captained Switzerland for the first time during his country’s 2-1 win over Andorra on Monday night.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes, which saw the Swiss retain their place at the top of World Cup Qualification Group B.

A penalty from Hoffenheim’s Fabian Schär and goal from Bayer Leverkusen’s Admir Mehmedi meant it was a good night for the Bundesliga. Even an Andorra consolation goal in the 90th minute from Alexandre Martínez Palau wasn’t enough.

Meanwhile, Laurent Koscielny played another 90 minutes for France in their 1-0 win against the Netherlands. A goal from Manchester United’s second coming, Paul Pogba, was all his country needed to seal the deal.

France remain top of Group A, level with Sweden but now three points ahead of the Netherlands.

Both players will be thrilled to get another 90 minutes for their country under their belts, while Xhaka, who only turned 24 recently, will no doubt be honoured to be handed the captain’s armband on such a big occasion.
