Arsene Wenger made a pretty interesting prediction of where he sees football in 20 years.

In an interview with Ian Wright, Sol Campbell and William Gallas for Arsenal Player, the boss spoke about how when he first joined Arsenal in 1996, he only had two or three people behind the scenes helping him run things. Now, there are closer to 20, which is something he can find difficult to manage since there are now more people’s opinions to think about.

However, when it comes to match preparation, despite having more people, technology and training methods have come along massively in the the 20 years and in the next 20, Wenger believes we won’t even need a football specialist to manage a team. Just “a guy with a big brain.”

Addressing Campbell, the boss revealed that soon, everything from team selection to tactics and formations could be chosen by a computer, essentially meaning that a manager doesn’t need to have any specialist knowledge. Just intelligence. Although I’d say that’s pretty debatable even now.

Everything else will be down to the players: the true stars.

It’s a scary thought and probably a decent idea for a sci-fi film if Wenger doesn’t have anything lined up.
