It’s looking more and more likely that Gareth Southgate will be promoted from interim England manager to full-time soon enough and Arsene Wenger thinks he’s the best man for the job.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Swansea, Wenger, who has been heavily linked with the England job himself, explained that it’s not about big names, it’s about getting the most competent man for the job.

“I believe he has accumulated experiences, he was a good observer. Show the decisions you make are right and have the strength to do what you think is right.

“Yes, he is [the right man for the job]. There is always demand for the big names but what is most important is the competence of the person.”

Does this mean Wenger has decided to stay at Arsenal?

Some reports are claiming that Southgate’s appointment depends on whether England beat Scotland next month so nothing’s set in stone yet.

Arsene Wenger is still at 5/1 to be handed the role but Roberto Mancini, who watched England v Malta recently, is at 3/1. Southgate remains the favourite at 11/10.

It’ll be interesting to find out if the FA did officially ask Wenger and he turned it down, they changed their mind or what have you.

Or perhaps it was a load of fuss over nothing…
