Arsenal, along with Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea are said to be monitoring Sergio Aguero’s situation at Manchester City with a report in Spain causing the internet to explode.

This rumour makes me both happy and sad. Happy because I would cry real tears of happiness if Arsenal were to sign Aguero. Sad because I know it’s never going to happen.

But let’s take a look at the rumour and see what’s what, anyway.

Starting in Don Balon, the report was picked up by a number of the major players, adding an air of legitimacy to what is a pretty nothing report.

Don Balon have no track record in breaking stories and the inclusion of Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea seems like an afterthought at the end of the article. Juventus and PSG are given a mention as well, just to cover all the bases.

Don Balon even include the most recent quote from Pep Guardiola about Aguero, when he said, “I want to make it clear I am very happy with Sergio and hope he can stay at the club for a long time. He is a very special player and we cannot forget how many goals scored here.”

That sounds very definitive to me.

The whole basis of the rumours linking Aguero with a move away from City is constructed around the premise that Pep Guardiola doesn’t want him. That all comes from Guardiola not starting him in a game or two and pundits who are paid to know better refusing to do any basic research before jumping to conclusions.

It’s nonsense.

Sad nonsense.

But nonsense nonetheless.
