Napoli’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis has admitted that he turned down an offer from Arsenal for Gonzalo Higuain this summer.

A player Arsenal tried to land before he went to Napoli, the Gunners were never going to pay his €90m release fee and Napoli were never going to accept anything less as they didn’t want to sell their star man.

Juventus, however, decided that €90m wasn’t too much for a 28-year-old with no resale value if they hold him until the end of his contract. They have been rewarded with six goals and one assist in seven Serie A games (a minute-per-goal-ratio of one every 66 minutes) and one goal in two Champions League games.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, ADL said, “We received a request from Arsenal.

“Personally I also received a request from Atletico Madrid but they didn’t put enough money on the table.

“We were not ready to sell him – for me Higuain was not for sale.

“One year earlier I offered another five-year contract to Higuain and his brother. ‘I will offer to you x’. It was more money than what he is getting right now from Juventus.”

Arsenal ended up signing Lucas Perez for around €20m and with absolutely no disrespect meant, he’s hardly in the same league as Higuain.

Is Higuain worth 4.5 times more than the Spaniard? It’s hard to tell.

If we ever get to see him playing a game for Arsenal, we might be able to make that judgement.
