Theo Walcott got yet another goal on Wednesday night bringing his tally to eight for the season, one shy of his 15/16 total.

Speaking in the pre-match programme, skipper Per Mertesacker highlighted just what it is that Theo has changed about his game that is reaping such big rewards and we saw yet more examples of it against the Bulgarians.

“I made clear in a recent notes that I see a different intensity when I watch him now,” said Mertesacker.

“Even when he misses a chance, he doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t jog back, he runs back to get into his position again.

“He looks full of energy but he also thinks about what he needs to do next.

“He thinks ‘where can I contribute the most?’ and he knows it’s with his intensity and pace.”

There’s no denying that only a few Arsenal fans would have shed a tear had the club decided to sell Theo in the summer. But this season he is doing everything we’ve ever wanted to see from him, namely, being arsed.

For so long, he coasted through games, afraid or unwilling to indulge in the dirty side of things and force his will upon the opposition.

Stronger, tougher and showing desire for the full 90, no matter the opposition, this is the Theo we all knew was in there.

The frustration came from him hiding it away for so long.

It was never, ever about Theo’s ability.

It was always his lack of application that caused problems with the fan base.

Give 100% and the fans will forgive all manner of stupid misses.
