It was a case of Arsenal’s most notable loanees in action against each other on Saturday as Middlesbrough hosted Bournemouth.

Calum Chambers, who has progressively improved on his loan spell under Aitor Karanka, has been rewarded a regular starting berth in recent matches and his potential is evident to see.

Showing positional awareness to good effect, he was more confident alongside Ben Gibson when the visitors looked threatening.

Making numerous clearances and interceptions in his own half, he was heavily involved defensively as Boro were made to work hard for their clean sheet – although the match highlights didn’t quite reflect that.

His passing was, for the most part, accurate. Suurprising, considering his ability to play out from the back, a few of his more ambitious long passes were unsuccessful but his comfort in possession continues to strengthen with each passing week and that can only be a good thing.

He was booked in the 90th minute for a tactical foul when he brought down Ryan Fraser, on a rare occasion when he did rush into a tackle and was correctly punished as a result by referee Stuart Atwell.

Overall, it was a solid defensive display from Chambers and his teammates and one which will instil a much-needed confidence boost given their recent run of form.

Having only kept one clean sheet since the start of the 2016/17 campaign (West Brom away, August), they’ve now kept two in consecutive weeks with improvement, collectively beginning to show.
