Carl Jenkinson made his first start for Arsenal’s firest team in 898 days on Tuesday night against Reading and, after the match, the right-back couldn’t stop smiling.

Speaking after the 2-0 victory in the EFL Cup, Jenko described how difficult it had been to not be sidelined for nine months and how it felt to finally return.

“It felt brilliant,” he grinned.

“It’s been a long time coming.

“Of course, I was on loan for a couple of years and that was really good for me. But coming back and having nine months out injured has been very tough. So days and nights like tonight make it all worthwhile.”

The 24-year-old injured his cruciate ligament during his second season on loan at West Ham. He returned to Arsenal and had to have surgery, which means he’s been out of action for the best part of a year.

Although Jenko made his return recently for Arsenal’s u23s, I imagine there’s nothing quite like stepping out at the Emirates and getting the reception he got. Considering he’s been a Gooner all his life, that feeling must be unreal. It’s brilliant to have him back.

Jenko’s performance against Reading was solid and although he did seem tired towards the end, after nine months out I’d be more surprised if he wasn’t!
