Ian Wright has admitted that he doesn’t want Arsene Wenger to take the England job for “selfish reasons”.

The Arsenal legend says he can’t handle seeing the boss get as much stick as he’s probably going to get if he’s unsuccessful as England manager.

“[I’d say] don’t do the England job, because it’s too much pressure,” the ex-striker said.

“He’s going to get so much stick.

“You see the amount of stick he getting from Arsenal [fans] when he’s trying to do his stuff. I wouldn’t like to see him go through [these] 20 years, and then the last 10 years it’s been [like this] for him.

“And then go to England and it not quite work out and you get that kind of stick as well… That’s a selfish reason, personally.”

This is, in all honesty, one of the reasons I don’t want Wenger taking the England job. Although he does get a lot of hassle from Arsenal fans, it’ll be nothing compared to England fans if he doesn’t make an immediate impact in charge of the Three Lions. Supporters of opposing teams already have 20 years of venom stored up just ready to spit out at him.

His style of management and football might not suit the current England squad.

If he does call up Arsenal players over others, even though he’s no long Arsenal manager, it’ll automatically be seen as bias. If he doesn’t pick Spurs players, it’ll be seen as discrimination.

The only way he’ll not come under any criticism as England manager is if he hits the ground running, and starts winning convincingly right off the bat, which is a massive ask for any manager.

Like Wright, I couldn’t bare watching him go through that during the final stages of his managerial career.
