Another Chelsea player has named Thierry Henry as their footballing idol; this time, it’s Willian.

Speaking to the Premier League website, the winger praised Henry’s ‘beautiful goals’ and named him as his idol, which, at this point isn’t really a surprise.

As I said last week when Eden Hazard said that Henry was his childhood hero, it’s not really anything to get excited over for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, Willian wouldn’t fit in with our current squad at all. Not only is his style of play not suited to ours but his goal return is probably lower than we would expect from a forward. This season he’s scored two goals so far, which isn’t that bad, but that doesn’t automatically mean he would gel with our team.

Not only this but saying he idolises Henry, who doesn’t even play football anymore, let alone for Arsenal, means nothing. It doesn’t mean he’s an Arsenal fan or wants to play for us. It simply means that he grew up watching the sport at a time when Henry was tearing the Premier League apart. He was one of the best players in the world at the time – of course, there will be current stars who still worship him to this day.

In 10/15/20 years time, we’re going to have dozens of world class footballers waxing lyrical about Lionel Messi. That doesn’t mean that they all support Barcelona…
