Arsene Wenger hailed David Ospina’s performance against PSG on Tuesday night and highlighted the importance of giving the goalkeeper game time in order to keep him at the club.

The boss may have given some insight into why Ospina had a sudden change of heart to stay at Arsenal this summer after all. The Colombian looked set to leave before he suddenly decided to stay and it appears that this could be down to Wenger promising him Champions League game time.

After his superb display against the Ligue 1 Champions, Wenger spoke about the importance of giving Ospina, as well as Petr Cech, time on the pitch.

“In the decisive moments when he could have [conceded] a penalty, when at one down in the first half he came out with a good header,” he said.

“You know, I have two world-class goalkeepers, I will repeat that. I know we have enough games to give them games. But if you cannot play… you cannot keep as well two world-class goalkeepers that don’t get games.”

Wenger then mentioned how both goalkeepers knew their ‘roles’ at the club.

“Look, we have the roles that the keepers know,” the Frenchman said.

“And that’s why it’s important to have clear roles when the season starts and when that changes I inform them. But they know what the roles of the season are.”

To me, this sounds as if Wenger promised Ospina Champions League starts, while Cech will remain number one in our Premier League squad. It remains to be seen whether this is actually the case.

Is this a good way of making two ‘world class’ goalkeepers stay at the club? Or is chopping and changing the squad every few games a little risky?
