Arsene Wenger doesn’t believe that Olivier Giroud’s first yellow against PSG on Tuesday night was even warranted, let alone his second.

Seconds before the final whistle blew during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with PSG, Giroud picked up a second yellow for what was supposedly a trip on Marco Verratti. The PSG player also got sent off for his ‘involvement’ in the altercation. However, while Wenger claims he didn’t see this incident, the first yellow the striker received wasn’t deserved.

“The ball was on the other side, I did not see what happened,” he revealed after the match.

“I think the first yellow card [for Giroud] was very harsh already, it wasn’t a foul. The second, he tells me he has done nothing at all and Olivier is honest so I believe him. And Verratti told me as well that he has done nothing, so I said look, ‘go together to see the referee and tell him you did nothing’.”

Oli appeared to get his first yellow from arguing with the referee over a decision. This isn’t a new occurrence for the Frenchman, who has picked up yellows for this a few times in the past. To be fair, at the age of 29, you’d think he would have learnt to keep his mouth shut but hey, that’s ‘passion’ for you.

The second yellow was slightly odd but can’t be overturned due to Uefa regulations.
