Shkodran Mustafi spoke after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against PSG on Tuesday night and described why it’s so difficult for defenders to play against Alexis.

The German described modern football as less static, using our very own Alexis as an example of a player who pulls defenders all over the pitch and never lets them rest.

“I think in football today, modern football, it is not as static as it was and that’s what makes the game so quick and so difficult,” The 24-year-old said to Arsenal Player.

“If you are a defender, you have to run all over the pitch to chase your striker and it is always difficult. I think we all know Alexis has qualities and he knows where to stand to give the opponent a difficult game. You have to give him credit for that.”

He added, “I think a 1-1 draw has to be considered a good result, but I think we started the game a little sloppy.

“In the end when we came out in the second half we had more of the game. I think in the end, we were unlucky to not take the three points. I think we did a good job in the second half, and we had more of the play in front of their goal and in the final third. In the end, we have to be happy with the point.”

It’s true. Alexis never stops running and he must be a nightmare to mark, considering how much freedom he’s granted. Thank goodness we have him on our side, that’s all I can say.

Mustafi didn’t have a terrible game. He does need to work on his positioning a little bit but I’m sure that’ll come once he’s had time to bed into the side. In the second half in particular he seemed a little more solid.

Learning alongside Laurent Koscielny should allow Mustafi to develop into more of an ‘Arsenal-y’ (totally a word) player over time. There’s no need to make a snap judgement based on two games. Give the bloke a chance.
