Jack Wilshere started and played 75 minutes as Bournemouth registered their second Premier League victory of the season at home against Everton, consequently ending their unbeaten streak.

Wilshere was operating as part of a midfield three alongside Andrew Surman and Harry Arter, in a 4-3-3 formation chosen by Eddie Howe. At times it became apparent that the 24-year-old had more of a free roam role to get forward often whilst his midfield teammates would cover him as part of a solid duo protecting the backline – something that had mixed success on this occasion.

Wilshere hit the crossbar in the 12th minute with a deflected effort after a surging run into the area when Callum Wilson used his agility to spin past his marker on the edge of the area and squared the ball into Jack’s path. He found himself in and around the edge of the area on a number of occasions but didn’t see much of the ball in promising areas of the pitch after Junior Stanislas’ excellent effort broke the deadlock before the interval.

Wilshere also showed a willingness to track back and help his teammates when out of possession, which was refreshing to see from a player constantly criticised for his perceived lack of effort at times. With Everton continuing to crank up the pressure in search of an equaliser, Howe took Wilshere off with 15 minutes left to play as the Cherries were content with holding out for a narrow 1-0 win, which they managed to do in the end.

He’ll be hoping to see more of the ball when played in future but based on this performance, he’s continuing to get better and maturing in a variety of different midfield roles.
