Middlesbrough’s boss, Aitor Karanka, has said that the arrival of Calum Chambers at the club along with the players he already has there is giving him a ‘good’ selection headache.

Set to play at centreback for Boro, Chambers will be hoping he can claim a starting spot but it is by no means guaranteed.

Speaking to the Boro website, Karanka said, “I’ve always said it’s a nice problem for me to have to arrive at my desk and have 20 players to choose from for the following game.

“Now with Calum and all of the players who have come in I have a good headache every single week.

““We were trying to bring in the right player in that position (defence) and we knew that most of the time in the transfer window there are bargains or surprises and Calum was one of them.

“I’m really pleased with him in the team.”

It’s not clear what the future holds for Chambers in terms of his Arsenal career after seemingly dropping down the pecking order and not able to force his way back up it.

While it looks like Jack Wilshere will return to play a role at the club and Joel Campbell won’t, it’s harder to call what will happen with Chambers.

His future really could depend on how he performs over the next nine months.

Still only 21, he’s under contract with Arsenal until 2020 so perhaps I’m being slightly hyperbolic.
