Northern Ireland goalkeeper, Michael McGovern, claims that his teammate, Jonny Evans, never got enough respect at Manchester United and he’s not surprised that Arsenal were apparently looking to sign him.

McGovern believes that Evans was an integral part of the United team that won the League and he could still play for a top Premiership club.

“I don’t think he gets enough respect,” he said.

“At Man United he never got enough respect and he was part of the team that won the league; it was him, (Nemanja) Vidic and (Rio) Ferdinand and Jonny played most of that season.

“He’s a class defender. I don’t know if it’s because he’s British, if he was foreign maybe he’d got more credit. I think he showed at the Euros what a top-class defender he is.

“It’s no surprise that there was a top Premier League team looking at him because I feel he’s more than capable of playing for a top-four team. He’s already proven that and I was surprised that he went to West Brom, in a way, because they got a bargain there. He could definitely still be playing for a top team.”

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for the West Brom defender and Tony Pulis even hinted that he would entertain talks if we were to approach him but this never happened.

The links seemed strong for a couple of days before they disappeared and I honestly can’t decided whether I think they were genuine or not.

We obviously were looking for a defender but it seems as if we really just went all in for Shkodran Mustafi, so I doubt we were really looking at anyone else. It seems like a risky game and I’m sure we had back-up players in mind but I doubt that Evans was one of them.

You never know, though.
