The Mirror are claiming that Arsenal signing Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia shows the club’s ambition, which could prompt Mesut Ozil to sign a new deal.

The playmaker has two years left on his existing contract and although I’m still personally convinced he’ll stay, since he seems happy enough in north London, the longer it takes for him to extend, the more nerve-racking the situation becomes.

According to the Mirror, Arsene Wenger is hopeful that the midfielder will sign following the signing of his compatriot, Mustafi.

Not only is signing the £35m defender supposedly proving to Mesut that we’re ambitious (Robin van Persie flashbacks), but the two Germans are meant to be firm friends.

To be fair, we don’t know why the talks are taking so long. The last thing that Wenger said about Ozil and Alexis Sanchez’s contract is that they’re being handled internally and that we shouldn’t panic.

“No. We keep that internal,” he said back in mid-August.

“We make progress always, but it is not always a quick process. They still have two years contract and there is no urgency as well.

“They (Arsenal fans) have no reason to be concerned. At the moment we have priorities, and most of the time contract extensions are done outside the win because it gives you a bit more time and focus on that.”

Perhaps now that the transfer window is shut and we have our ‘priorities’ taken care of in that sense, we can move on to tying the two stars down to contract extensions.
