Wojciech Szczesny has given his first interview since moving back to Roma for another season on loan and expressed his determination to win the Serie A title while there.

The goalkeeper, who finally completed his loan move back to Roma on Thursday after 84 years of speculation, has always been ambitious and that hasn’t changed.

“Do I have a message to the fans? Just keep believing,” he said to Roma’s website.

“We showed you guys what we can do last year and I’m sure that we can continue that this year throughout the season. With your belief behind us, I’m sure we can achieve great things.”

He continued, “I’ve joined AS Roma and I want to win the Scudetto. I have no other objectives. Last year we played a great second round but when you’re at a big club can tell you satisfied only if lots for the title. After a good season there was the chance to come back and I’m glad that the coach wanted me.

“I don’t want to think about the favourites. On paper, [Roma] probably are, but we showed in the second half of last season that we can play at a very good level for a long period of time. And I think if we continue that this year, then we have a real chance.”

Woj is 26 now and although goalkeepers tend to ‘blossom’ later than outfield players, now is the time where he really needs to be setting clear targets for his future. At Arsenal, he’s undoubtedly behind Petr Cech and I don’t think he has any issue with that – the former Chelsea man is one of the best in the world – but once Cech leaves, Woj needs to ready to step up and fill his gloves.

This second loan spell is preparation for exactly that.

If he does win the Serie A title with Roma, even better. It’ll give him the taste of winning and he can carry that mentality over to north London. If we still need it by then, of course!
