Thierry Henry has made it clear that he rates Manchester United’s new signing, Paul Pogba, but also believes he needs to work on his defensive work if he’s going to be played in a deeper role.

The former Arsenal man spoke about the Frenchman’s move to the Red Devils, insisting that he’s a ‘very talented’ player. However, he has his reservations over where Jose Mourinho chooses to play the 23-year-old.

Speaking to Sky Sports recently, he said, “I’m just waiting to see what he will do and how he will play.

“The way I would like to see him play is in a more advanced position, I think in the Euros he played for France in a deeper role. As long as the ball is in front of him he can deal with it but as soon you have runs behind him he tends to forget to defend.

“When he plays in a higher position he can be more efficient, he has tonnes of skills, he can score goals. I think he will help Manchester United in that position, I don’t think it’s a good thing if they play him as only a midfielder. I’m very excited to see him play in the Premier League.”

Indeed, Pogba’s performance for France during the Euros was underwhelming. He was far from a poor player but considering he was one of the big names to watch during the tournament, the fact that he only scored one goal (v Iceland) and claimed one assist was a little disappointing. Of course, he showed moments of brilliant and I can understand why any Manchester United fan is excited to have him back, even to the tune of £89m, but Henry is right to be skeptical.
