Wojciech Szczesny has admitted that he would welcome former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen at Roma.

The goalkeeper has only just completed his second season-long loan move to the Serie A club but he’s already been asked about what he thinks of the latest transfer rumour involving his former Arsenal teammate, Tommy V.

Vermaelen has been linked with a move away from Barcelona, after signing for them only two seasons ago, with the likes of Liverpool, West Ham and even Arsenal (I know) being linked. However, Roma were the club he was rumoured to be joining early on.

Speaking in his first interview since moving back to Italy, Woj hailed his former skipper, although he did admit that he hasn’t spoken to him much since he left north London.

“Yeah, Vermaelen is a good player,” Woj said.

“I haven’t spoken to him much since he left Arsenal, but he’s a very good player. If there was a possibility of him playing for Roma, I’d be delighted because he’s a very good friend of mine and a terrific player.”

I’m not sure what they expected Woj to say – it’s a little odd for a club’s official website to be asking about players that they have been linked with in the press, which does make me think there might be something to those rumours.

The Poland international probably doesn’t care who comes to the club, he just wants to play regular football and develop, which is all he should care about at the age of 26.
