After slating Jurgen Klopp and Arsene Wenger recently over comments that spending close to £100m on one player is crazy, Jose Mourinho hinted that Manchester United can afford to do this because they’re a big club, while ‘other clubs’ can’t.

Jose Mourinho is about as subtle as a poke in the eye – something he’d know about all too well – and his recent dig at the tiny footballing minnows that are Liverpool and Arsenal is almost laughable.

The Red Devils have got their man Paul Pogba, a snip at £89m rather than the £100m that was initially reported (what a saving!!!), and Mourinho wants everyone to know just how okay he is with spending this money. He’s soooo okay; it’s not his money, after all. So okay that he took the opportunity to make a dig at managers who didn’t think it was okay, while belittling their clubs.

“I like everything [about Pogba],” he said.

“I know the discussion, I understand that – sometimes in football, things happen and the club breaks the record, but this is only possible at clubs like Man United.

“When I heard some of the comments and heard some of the managers criticising that, I don’t think they ever have this problem because, to have this problem, you need to be at one of the top clubs in the world. So at Man United it can happen.

“We need to get the best out of him and this will be a process. So if he needs protection, I am here to protect.”

It’s typical Jose, nothing new to see here. However, Wenger’s used to the former Chelsea manager’s antics; I’d be surprised if he doesn’t already have detailed drafts written up on ‘how to deal with Jose Mourinho’s transparent media fodder’, but Klopp isn’t so much. It’ll be interesting to see how he reacts.
