Surprisingly (to us, at least), Wojciech Szczesny didn’t start during Roma’s Champions League qualifying match against Porto, which his loan team drew 1-1.

We were always under the impression that Woj would start. However, the goalkeeper apparently wasn’t fit enough and started on the bench. The Poland international is expected to compete for the number one spot with Roma’s other goalkeeper, Alisson.

Thomas Vermaelen, who’s on loan from Barcelona, made a bit of a boo boo, getting sent off for two yellows in the first half, leaving Roma down to 10-men for almost an hour.

Both goals came from Porto: an own goal from Felipe in the 21st minute and a penalty in the 61st from Andre Silva.

The draw means the result will be decided next Tuesday in the return leg.

Once Woj is fully fit, it’s likely that he’ll get his starting spot back. Although Alisson has enough quality to challenge and get plenty of game time himself.
