Earlier this morning we covered reports of an EXCLUSIVE in the Daily Star which claimed that Santi Cazorla had been made captain of Arsenal.

Handed the armband for the match against Liverpool, the Star said he was the new club captain and we pondered the decision, mentioning how Per Mertesacker had been expected to get it before his injury as Arsene Wenger simply likes to promote his vice-captain when a captain leaves.

With his injury ruling him out until the new year, and his contract expiring next summer, it was not really a surprise to see the armband go to someone else.

But guess what? The Star’s EXCLUSIVE was wrong.

Shocking, I know.

I’m not entirely sure what to make of this.

One the one hand, it’s so completely Arsene Wenger that none of us should be shocked. He gives no importance to the role of captain, for him it is merely ceremonial.

On the other had we have yet another season ahead of us with our captain out of the game. In the last three seasons, Arsenal captains have started a total of 13 games (Vermaelen 7, Arteta 6, Arteta 0).

That just doesn’t seem right to me at all.
