The Arsenal defender, Josephine Henning, stayed on the bench for the whole 90 minutes as Germany beat China PR and avoided an upset, unlike world #1 USA and #3 France who went home earlier than expected.

Germany beat China PR thanks to a goal by Behringer and got a let off when China, who were down to 10 players, missed a late penalty in the game.

Triple holders and world #1 USA lost in a penalty shootout with Sweden. The Swedes parked the bus and took the lead on the break via Blackstenius, before a Morgan equaliser sent the game into extra time. No goals were scored and Sweden won the penalty shootout for the biggest upset in the tournament for a long, long time.

Canada beat France 1-0 with a Schmidt goal in a game where France did not really turn up and marked Cadamuro’s retirement at the tender age of 29. A shame to see a top player go so early but following her wedding, she decided it was the right time to start a family.

Brazil beat Australia in a penalty shootout with the game finishing 0-0. The Brazilian goalie was lucky to step out a metre away from her line on many occasions but was never punished by the referee or her assistant.

The semi-finals are on Tuesday and will see Brazil against Sweden with the home team favourites and the other semi-final will see Canada take on Germany. The Bronze and Gold medal games will be played on Friday.
