The Arsenal centre back was again an unused sub and has not seen much game time in the tournament but will come back with at least a silver medal.

Germany beat Canada 2-0 with a penalty from Behringer and a goal from Daebritz to book their place in the Gold Medal match on Friday. It will be an all-European final with Sweden defeating the hosts Brazil in a penalty shoot-out after the match had ended 0-0.

Sweden upset the odds again defeating Brazil after taking care of the USA, with their defensive display. They had their defensive block positioned deep and ready to pounce on any counter-attack that came their way.

It did not make a great spectacle according to many watching the game, but the opposition style is always worth watching in term of tactics. As we all know, Portugal won the Euro 2016 with not much entertainment but efficiency when it mattered.

At the end of the day, style and beautiful football do not win any trophies. Of course it is better on the eye to watch exciting attacking football, but teams with limitations will always try to win with their available weapons.

It’s up to the attacking side to prepare tactically to be able to break down a team that is parking the bus. The answer to that problem is available in any coaching manual and it is just a question of being able to execute those attacking moves properly with enough skill and speed to create goalscoring opportunities.

The bronze medal game will see Brazil take on Canada and the Gold medal game will see Germany versus Sweden on Friday evening.

Good luck to Josie and her team-mates for the final
