Serge Gnabry has said he was ‘very happy’ to score for Germany against Mexico in their Rio Olympics opener as the sides drew 2-2.

The Germans fell behind but Gnabry, on as a first half sub for the injured Leon Goretzka, pulled the sides level in the second half.

Speaking to the German national site, the Arsenal man, who has missed a large chunk of football recently due to a knee injury, said [via Google translate]

In a moment you cannot think too much,” Gnabry said. “So you have to make the decision quickly and apply full throttle on the pitch.”

“As an attacking player it’s always good if you can take many balls at pace towards the goal. We have some super balls played forward.

“That it worked out today with a goal for me, it makes me very happy, even if I was going to have one thing more.”

Not really sure what that last bit means, but it’s probably not important.

Next up for Gnabry and the Germans is South Korea who they face on Sunday. The Koreans opened their tournament with an 8-0 thumping of Fiji’s Olympic side and will not be easy opponents for the World Champions.

South Korea finished with a bronze medal in London 2012, a tournament that was won by Germany’s opponents in the early hours of Friday morning.
