Serge Gnabry is confident of sealing Germany’s place in the Olympic final when they face Nigeria at 9.30pm (UK) in Rio as he aims to go home with a gold medal.

Beating Portugal 4-0 to set up the semi-final, Gnabry has been the standout star of the whole tournament, netting six goals so far, making him the top scorer at the competition – handy when Arsenal are in need of a goalscorer.

“I think we had a great performance [against Portugal],” Gnabry told FIFA.com.

“We stuck together as a team, our system worked very well against Portugal and I think we deserved to win.

“Our goal is obviously to win the whole tournament. We came here with this goal and hopefully we can carry on in the next game.”

It’s not clear what the future holds for Gnabry when he returns to Arsenal after the tournament.

He only has one year left on his contract, although a new one will surely be coming his way after he has definitively proven that he is not suffering any lasting effects from the knee injury that kept him sidelined for over a year.

A disappointing loan with West Brom last season, Tony Pulis didn’t seem to rate him, is most likely going to be followed up with another this season, but only after a new deal is agreed.

Gnabry has suitors in the Bundesliga, but Arsenal will no doubt prefer to have him closer to home, experiencing the rigours of life in the Premier League on a regular basis as he prepares for life in the Arsenal first team.
