Dan Crowley played nine minutes for Oxford United as they grabbed all three points thanks to an injury time penalty against Peterborough on Saturday afternoon.

Not included in the squad for their game against Fleetwood Town during the week, Crowley has so far played just 33 minutes of the U’s four league games this season, 24 of those coming when he was brought on in the 66th minute for their 2-1 win over Bristol Rovers.

Manager Michael Appleton admitted that he had to have a word with Crowley after the player confronted the referee in an aggressive manner, which even saw him making contact with the official, during their game against Brentford.

Speaking at the start of August, Appleton said, “We don’t want liabilities and I’m sure that won’t be the case, but we had a quiet conversation with him afterwards.

“We explained in a game you might have thought it was a bit of a joke with the referee but I don’t think the referees will see it like that with the new rules.”

Crowley replaced Wes Thomas in the 81st minute with the score level at 1-1. In the 93rd minute, Chris Maguire was fouled in the box by Jack Baldwin who also received a second yellow for the offence.
