Following Arsenal’s 4-3 loss to Liverpool, Petr Cech spoke to Sky Sports and claimed that the visitors were very aggressive.

The goalkeeper, who wasn’t completely to blame for any of the goals but could have done better on a couple, claimed that Liverpool were simply more ambitious than us. Which, to be fair, pretty much sums up Arsenal right now.

“We had a great start to the game,” Cech said.

“We were organised and controlled the game. It was disappointing to miss the penalty but the reaction of the team was great because we broke through.

“In the second half, the momentum changed because of the free-kick.

“Liverpool came out with more ambition and were very aggressive.

“We were punished by the Lallana goal and once we fell behind we opened the game too quickly and allowed them three, four, five counter-attacks.

“When you are 4-1 down in the opening game it’s sometimes hard to find guts to react but we scored two goals. At 4-1 it is difficult to come back.

“You don’t want to lose games. As a player we understand the supporters came with the ambition to win the first game of the season.

“You have to take the result on the chin. We played well for 60 minutes. We were not good enough for 30 minutes.”

By aggressive, we can only assume Cech means they displayed a more attacking style of play.

Arsenal did start the better team but even then, despite going 1-0 up, I didn’t know one Gooner who was actually confident that we would extend that lead or hold onto it. And that’s a sad state of affairs, when your own fans don’t even expect you to win. It’s nothing to do with the quality of the players, we’ve just seen Arsenal throw away leads so many times we’ve come to expect it.

Liverpool were ambitious and, I guess, aggressive in that they scored their four goals in 20 minutes. They saw weakness and launched a full-scale attack on us. It worked.
