Santi Cazorla is set to wear the captain’s armband against Liverpool according to the Daily Star, with many papers stating that he has been made the new club captain.

The armband had been expected to be given to Per Mertesacker, an understandable choice but a frustrating one given how unlikely it was that he would play every game. Now, with his injury keeping him out for four or five months, and the Liverpool game tomorrow, Arsenal looked like they were going into the season without a recognised captain.

Wenger, who sees less importance in the role than many others, likes to simply promote his vice captain when a captain leaves, something he’s had plenty of experience with.

The Daily Star claim their story as an Exclusive and with two years left on his current deal it also means we are unlikely to see it change again next season.

So, there you have it, Santi seems to be Arsenal’s new captain.
