Unfortunately, Takuma Asano’s Japan were knocked out of the Rio 2016 Olympics on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old striker featured but failed to score against Sweden, who won 1-0 but were also still knocked out on just four points, level with Japan. Nigerian and Colombia are the two countries to progress from Group B.

Asano individually had a good tournament, scoring in Japan’s previous two games, but sadly it wasn’t enough to help his team progress to the quarter-finals.

So, what now for Asano? It’s unclear whether the speedy striker will be at Arsenal next season or out on loan, although I think the latter is more likely. He genuinely seems to be a very exciting player and it’ll be a shame if we don’t get to see him appear for the club but I’m sure Arsene Wenger, as usual, has a plan for him in one way or another.

In other Rio 2016 news, Serge Gnabry continued his goal streak to score two more in Germany’s 10-0 thrashing of Fiji. They do progress to the quarter-finals.
