Gedion Zelalem enjoyed a mixed time in Scotland during his season long loan with Rangers.

Part of a side that won promotion back to the SPL, Zelalem started strongly but faded throughout the season, perhaps not unsurprisingly given his age and level of experience preceding a campaign of professional football.

But despite doubts that some have expressed about Zelalem and his Arsenal future, Warburton used the teenager as an example as to why more Scottish players should go out on loan.

“I get told Scottish boys don’t travel well,” Rangers boss Mark Warburton told the Scottish Daily Mail.

“But look at Gedion Zelalem. He’s 18 years old and he came over from Germany to the United States then to London with Arsenal, played in the Champions League with them, then came up to Rangers on loan.

“He is 18!

“That’s the difference, why aren’t our 18-year-olds doing that?

“We get stuck in a rut with the thought process being to send them local. But we should be asking what is the best club to challenge a player — and if it’s in Cornwall, Torquay or Bournemouth then do it. But we don’t.”

It’s not clear yet what the future holds for the American but I would expect that we will see him play during Arsenal’s tour of the States next month.

After that, another loan seems the most likely with a Championship club the next logical step for the midfielder.
