Silvia Neid has named her squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics and Arsenal’s Josephine Henning has been selected in the 18 strong players squad.

The German centre back has been a regular for her country despite a troubled 2014/15 season truncated by multiple injuries. She will wear the shirt number 2.

She is a classy, calm and collected experienced defender with many medals for club and country, so it is not a surprise to  see her called up for the tournament.

Germany are placed in Group F and will play Zimbabwe in their opening group game on 3rd August. They will then meet a strong outsider in Australia on 6th August and play their final group game on 9th August against the 2012 bronze medal winners, Canada.

A potential quarter-final against France or the USA will be played four days later and then semi-finals and a potential gold medal game. Both games will be played at a three-day interval, making it a hard physical tournament.

Group E comprises Brazil, China, South Africa and Sweden, while Group G will feature Colombia, France, New Zealand and the USA.

Teams can also select four players who can be called up during the tournament if a player is injured and cannot play any more due to the initial small squad size.
