Granit Xhaka has no plans to shirk his penalty taking responsibilities despite missing for his country and costing them a place in the quarter finals in France.

Having been voted MOTM at least twice in the three group games (it depends where you get your MOTM stats, some had him as MOTM for all three but UEFA just two) his miss was a bit of a shock, but not as much as it must have been to the player himself who blasted well wide.

The internet wasted no time in labelling a man, who was quite probably his country’s player of the tournament, a ‘bottler’ though to be fair most of the calls came from the media looking for some retweets and Spurs fans who are desperate shine the bottling spotlight on someone else for a little while.

Speaking after the game, Granit said “I’m sorry for my team mates, for the travelling fans, for Switzerland.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I will make sure I come back even stronger.

“I took the penalty the way I always do. But I didn’t connect properly with the ball. I am still a young person, only 23.

“This just makes me stronger. And I promise I will step up at the next penalty shootout.”

Good lad.
