It promises to be an exciting summer for Arsenal fans if the first few weeks of the transfer window are anything to go by.

Uncharacteristically, Arsene Wenger has made significant moves in the market, he’s gone in, and gone big. Granit Xhaka has joined from Gladbach for a fee reported to be around £35m and the Gunners have also triggered the release clause in Jamie Vardy’s contract, although it remains to be seen whether the English forward will decide to leave Leicester for the Emirates.

The arrival of Xhaka has been welcomed by Arsenal fans, who can look forward to their new recruit pulling the strings in the Swiss midfield at Euro 2016. Left-footed, Xhaka has excellent technique and an eye for a pass which will fit right into Arsenal’s style, but more importantly, he can play in front of the back four, offering protection with his clever positional play and know-how which will be pivotal in preventing opposition attacks and moving the ball quickly.

You would anticipate that he would complement the likes of Coquelin and Elneny in a 4-2-3-1 formation and could play a key part as Wenger looks to end his Premier League trophy drought. Since his signing the attention has firmly switched to one man – Jamie Vardy.

It was something of a shock when news broke that Arsenal had triggered his release clause for many different reasons, and the signing is still doubtful as Vardy embarks on his first major international tournament with England. A decision is unlikely to be made until the tournament has finished, but Arsenal fans can hopefully watch their potential new no.9 in action against Wales on Thursday night. Whether Vardy is ideal for Arsenal is another debate entirely.

On one hand his blistering pace and direct runs would benefit from the class that Cazorla, Ozil and Sanchez have but there are also doubts about his style. Leicester won the league playing a very direct game, based on counter attacking, it’s the complete opposite at Arsenal.

Bar the major European ties and high profile away games, Arsenal are usually dictating play and keeping the ball as they look for an opening, which invariably leads to a deep defensive unit from the opposition. If that’s the case it is hard to utilise Vardy’s chief asset – his pace.

Given money shouldn’t be an issue, you would imagine players like Gonzalo Higuaín or Alvaro Morate, who is attracting a lot of interest, would be more suited to this current Arsenal side given their ability at dropping deep and their all-round game.

However, if Vardy does join, there is no reason why he can’t be successful and for Arsenal fans it is pleasing that Wenger has identified centre-forward as a position that requires some reinforcements.

Arsenal have suffered from the same mistakes year after year, and crumble come the latter part of the season but with Xhaka, a forward and then one or two tweaks defensively then the Gunners should be back challenging again, and positively for fans, Wenger’s early moves in the market suggests he finally knows that.
