Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny both featured for France as they beat Ireland  2-1 to seal their place in the quarter-finals, with Oli putting in a great shift.

Ireland took a shock early leave when the referee gave them a penalty after Paul Pogba bundled Shane Long to the ground and the Irish more than held their own for the first half, taking their lead into the break.

France, however, needed just 13 minutes of the second to pull level through Antoinne Griezmann.

Two minutes later, he bagged a second, turning the whole game on its head and sending the hosts through.

Giroud played a vital role in the second with both central defenders being drawn to him. Somehow, he managed to rise higher than both of them and flick the ball into the path of Griezmann who made no mistake.

Five minutes later and it was even worse for Ireland as Shane Duffy saw red for a professional foul on Griezmann as he ran through unopposed, looking to claim his hattrick.

It was Giroud’s pass that sent him through.

That was to be his last involvement, apart from being shoved over at the resulting freekick and having the commentators accuse him of diving. He was replaced by Gignac with the game looking like there would only be one winner.

Giroud had been strong throughout and generally looked like a very good centre forward, even if he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet.

As for Kos, well, he didn’t really had much to do. He’ll be happy with that.
