Joel Campbell and Costa Rica are heading home from the Copa America after the end of the group stages while David Ospina watched on from the bench as Colombia lost 3-2 to Joel’s team in Houston, Texas.

Campbell knew that no matter the result, his tournament would be over as Costa Rica had failed to win either of their first two games (losing 4-0 to the hosts USA and drawing 0-0 with Paraguay).

Colombia, conversely, knew they had already qualified and made 10 changes from their 2-1 win over Paraguay for the dead rubber. Alongside Ospina sat James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado, and Carlos Bacca to name just three.

Campbell himself got only 11 minutes of action (plus four minutes’ injury time), coming on for Bryan Ruiz. He still managed to pick up a yellow card for kicking the ball away in the third minute of added-on time; the same number of cards as accurate passes.

Johan Venegas had given Costa Rica a lead after only two minutes with a thunderbolt.

Colombia were leve,l through Frank Fabra, just four minutes later when he cut past three players, tried to set up his teammate only to have the ball come back to him to slot home from around 15 yards out.

20 minutes later Fabra was back on the scoresheet again but this time at the wrong end when he handed Costa Rica the lead.

2-1 at the break became 3-1 13 minutes after halftime after a fine finish from midfielder Celso Borges.

With 17 minutes remaining Colombia pulled one back through Marlos Moreno with another decent finish in a game that was full of them, but that was to be the last as Costa Rica held on to secure their only win of the tournament.

Colombia will play in the quarter finals between June 16th and 18th US.
