According to the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), Hector Bellerin is worth €55.6m i.e. £43.1m; around 0.5 seconds later, Barcelona announced they would not be perusing him.

In wake of Dani Carvajal’s injury, Bellerin has been promoted to the senior Spain squad. Seeing him in training surrounded by the very players who tugged a Barcelona shirt over Cesc Fabregas back in 2010 brings back unwelcome memories. It also starts raising the questions of when will the Catalans come for the 21-year-old, rather than if. There’s no doubt he’s a good player and now we’re not the only ones to see it.

Dani Alves has confirmed he’s leaving the La Liga giants and Bellerin has been rumoured to be his replacement, although it seems a little premature.

Oddly, shortly after the news was announced that the right-back is worth £43.1, making him the most valuable defender in the world, Barca stated that they wouldn’t be pursuing him.

“He is a magnificent player but it is not something that we will be pursuing,” said the Barca sporting director, Roberto Fernandez.

Does this have anything to do with his price tag? I wouldn’t bet against it.
