Arsene Wenger has targeted second place ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday.

Three points separate us from Spurs second, with us yet to play City and the newly relegated Aston Villa on the final day of the season. Our north London rivals, on the other hand, have Southampton and Newcastle. It could be argued that we have slightly harder fixtures but the Saints are by no means easy competition, as they proved to us on Boxing Day.

Speaking ahead of our match against the Sky Blues, the boss stated that although our main goal is just to get Champions League football, it’s possible to finish second.

“That’s our target now, to secure our position in the Champions League next year and, if possible, to get second place,” Wenger said.

“At least secure third place. On Sunday we can do that, we have two games and if we win the two games we’ll be alright.”

As things stand, statistically we could finish between second and sixth (the latter only if West Ham were to win all three of their remaining games while we lose both of ours). It’s more likely that we’ll finish third, as we’re ahead of City by three points already, but I don’t see us finishing second. Spurs have let the title slip but would they honestly give up the opportunity to finish above us as well?
