Although Arsene Wenger acknowledged that Leicester City have been remarkable this season, he also pointed out how they had fewer fixtures than a lot of teams.

The Foxes were knocked out of the Capital One Cup back in October by Hull (5-4 on penalties) and then the FA Cup in January by title rivals Spurs. Without European football to play, they just had Premier League fixtures for about half the season. Not to take anything away from their title win but this would have been a big help, something that Wenger pointed out ahead of our final game against Aston Villa.

“It was a strange season,” the boss mused.

“We finish the season disappointed because we thought we had the chance to win the championship. Of course we are frustrated but I must say we had Leicester, who had consistent results, and the rest of the league who had ups and downs. Everyone else can be frustrated but Leicester have lost only three games and everybody else didn’t have the same consistency.

“Is it down to the fact that Leicester were a surprise package? That they only played one competition? Certainly there are some explanations in there.

“You have to say they have been absolutely remarkable.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the Foxes fare with the addition of the Champions League next season. This isn’t an ‘issue’ they’ve ever had to deal with before so this will prove whether their place in the top four is for the long haul or just a one-season-wonder. The extra fixtures and injury problems that’ll no doubt come with it; the potential loss of first team players… Football at the top isn’t easy.
