Arsene Wenger has admitted that he’s ‘devasted’ over Danny Welbeck’s newest injury.

The striker limped off in the first half of Arsenal’s 2-2 draw away to Manchester City and although we knew it probably wasn’t great news, the fact that he’s facing a further nine months on the sidelines is gut-wrenching.

The England international only returned recently from 10 months out thanks to surgery on the opposite knee and now, thanks to this new issue, which also requires an operation, Danny is missing Euro 2016.

Speaking ahead of our final match against Aston Villa, the boss was understandably gutted.

“We are all devastated and very sad,” he said.

“The whole team is thinking like that because it’s surprising news. I expected, at worst, him to miss the Euros. That was already bad.

“He just came back after a year out.

“We’ll support him to cope and I have a secret hope that maybe it could be shorter than the timescale that has been given out.

“He was, in qualifying, a key player. I think he has a good understanding with the rest of the squad and he’s very versatile. He can play on the flanks and he can play through the middle, I believe it’s a big loss for England as well.”

Since signing for Arsenal from Manchester United in 2014, Welbeck has only appeared 49 times in all competitions. 36 in the Premier League. He’s spent more time on the sidelines than he has on the pitch and it’s impossible to imagine what he’s going through. Although Wenger claimed the club are supporting him, hopefully this means mentally as well as physically because repeatedly getting knocked down in such a way can ruin even the strongest individuals.
