Arsène Wenger rubbished rumours that he is close to signing a new Arsenal contract on Friday morning, insisting that his future remains undecided.

On Thursday evening, the Times published an article saying Wenger is set to be offered a two-year extension at Arsenal, with a decision wanted before October.

Facing the press on Friday, though, the Arsenal manager insisted the story is unfounded and nobody – neither Arsenal nor himself – has made a decision on his future.

“My focus is to respect my contract and after, envisage what I will do later,” said the boss of almost 20 years.

With many fans upset about the way this season has panned out, there is a lot of pressure on Wenger and on the club as a whole to rectify mistakes, which some feel would include a new manager coming in.

However, the Frenchman’s contract runs until the end of next season and he will fulfill that at the very least.

“I can understand that people are interested in that but that’s not the most important thing. I think I’ve extended my contract in a period when it was vital for the club.

“After, I will see where I am personally and where the club stands at the end of my contract.”

Asked what he meant by that, the boss confirmed that a decision will only be made when next season is underway and everyone can assess how things are going on the pitch and for Wenger, who would be 69 by the time a two-year extension ended, personally.

“You sum it up very well,” Wenger replied to James Olley.

That’s certainly the most sensible way for Arsenal and Wenger to approach his future, considering a plan will have to be in place for a post-Wenger era soon and the club can’t know two or three years in advance which managers will be available.
