After ten months out with a knee injury suffered towards the end of last season, Danny Welbeck must be having horrible flashbacks.

The Arsenal forward went down holding his knee again on Sunday, standing up only to shake his head before walking straight down the tunnel during the first half of the 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Reports said the England international would be meeting with a specialist surgeon on Tuesday as he looks for advice on his recovery.

There have been different suggestions on what the injury is but the Arsenal medical team seemed to believe that Welbeck has suffered a torn lateral meniscus, an injury which would certainly require surgery.

As detailed here, there is no direct blood supply to the centre of the meniscus, meaning any tears will no theal on their own and surgery is required. It seems that Welbeck has suffered an injury like that and undergoing an operation will be necessary.

That will rule him out of Euro 2016, an incredibly huge blow after so much hard work has gone into returning to full fitness. Roy Hodgson was set to name his squad for the summer tournament this week but has delayed his announcement until Monday.

Shoudl Welbeck require surgery, Arsenal and England will be without him for a number of months. The recovery time varies depending on the success of the surgery and the severity of the injury but Arsenal can expect Welbeck to miss pre-season and possibly the beginning of next season.

After 10 months out and a return to form, this is the last thing Welbeck needed.

Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and is back on the pitch for club and country sooner than expected.
